This month-long special “Love Reaches Camp” matching gift drive is the creation of several long-time campers who are missing Camp and each other right now. Please take a moment to read this Love Reaches Camp Letter by Family Camp attendee Jenn Bowen. She poingantly describes how so many of us are feeling.
“August 1, 2020
Dear friends, dear friends, let me tell you how I feel…
I’m sitting on my porch, enjoying a cup of coffee and a pleasant, sunny morning. So, for that and other things, I feel grateful. Grateful for my home and for the family, peers and friends of support that I have as I continue to face each day during this pandemic. I also feel sad. Sad for our country, for so many people who suffer racial, economic, social injustices and are continuing to speak out and fight against these oppressions. I also feel angry and so so soooo disappointed in the tumultuous and more corrupt than I realized government that has so quickly eroded so many good things this country has made progress with. But lastly, I feel hopeful. Hopeful that we, as Americans and as UU’s (both regularly and via camp J), will continue to fight for and make gains towards equality, equity and justice for all people.
So, that’s how I feel on this particular morning. I’m feeling and listening to music that I wished I had heard while on a cabin porch at deBenneville Pines. Is this somewhat melancholy mixture of feelings what they call “muscle memory?” I mean today is the day I should be hearing, “Leaving on a Jet Plane” and “Circle Game” at the fire circle closing, tearing up as I say goodbye once again to my family in the woods.
I, like so many of us, have faced disappointments and struggles through this pandemic, and one of the biggest for me was not being able to reconnect to that family in the woods up at Family Camp. I’ve missed it so this week…because I love being in the mountains, stepping over the rocks and strolling through the trees, hearing the sounds of the multigenerational campers in the lodge, gazebo, tie-dye tables, trails, quiet corners and in noisy workshops. I love the smell of the pines, the stream, the dust during capture the flag and dam building. I love the sense of community and connection and oneness with families from afar or just down the hill a bit. I love the joy, sorrow, singing, feasting, playing, talking, swimming, hiking, crafting, being serious and silly, and the LOVE that we develop and share with one another throughout our week in the woods.
I share this with you today because I’m moved to do so. And also, because I know our beloved place, whether you continue to attend camps or hold long ago memories of growing up and coming of age, is in jeopardy. I’m also moved to do so because of the wide range of connection and growing up I was afforded because of camp. I can’t capture in this letter what an impact deBenneville Pines has had on my life, and on the lives of so many of my dear family and friends who have attended Family, LRY and YoUUth Camps over the years. I’m so fortunate to have had this magical place calling me back since I was 5 years old! (I’m turning 50 in 9 days and have celebrated many birthdays at camp too!).
So, this letter is reflective of this moment I’m in, we are all in, in some fashion. We have lost occasions, and some of us loved ones, to this pandemic. Many of us have lost our weeks in the woods. But let’s NOT LOSE CAMP all together! Please join me and make a donation to a place that has reached you and provided you with LOVE…let’s let this LOVE reach back to camp! And let’s do so by making this donation during the month of August and we will be matched by a private donor as well! Please complete the donation form below and let’s show how Family, LRY and YoUUth Campers can give back, whether recent or from the past, and whether large or small! Let’s let our LOVE REACH BACK TO CAMP!
With love, connection and community reaching you – Jenn Bowen”
